Michael Allen Wood, 50, of New Philadelphia died Monday, November 13, 2017.

Born in Union Hospital at Dover on May 24, 1967, Mike was a son of the late Richard “Woody” Wood and JoEllen Scott.

Mike was a 1985 graduate of New Philadelphia High School and earned his bachelor’s degree from Muskingum College. He furthered his education in business and accounting at Wright State University and Franklin University, and most recently worked as the controller for Tank Services at Dennison.

Mike was an avid sports fan. He loved taking his son Cory to Cleveland Indians and Cavaliers games. They also enjoyed eating out, trying new restaurants, and traveling to Columbus for “dinner and a movie” at AMC Theatre. They also enjoyed “wing nights” at the Broadway Brewhouse and Buffalo Wild Wings, and shopping for the latest tennis shoes.

In addition to his love for the Cleveland sports teams, Mike was an avid Ohio State Buckeyes fan and an active official for the Ohio High School Athletic Association, officiating baseball, basketball, volleyball, and softball.

Mike will be missed by his son, Cory Wood of Uhrichsville; his sister, Deb Smitley of New Philadelphia; and a nephew, Nathan Chitti, who is currently serving in the United States Navy.

In addition to his parents, Mike was preceded in death by a brother, Greg Wood and a brother-in-law, Jesse Smitley.

The family will greet guests during a reception and celebration of Mike’s life on Friday, November 17, 2017 from 4-7 PM in the Geib Funeral Center at Dover. Private burial in East Avenue Cemetery will take place at a later date.

Words can't even express how truly heart broken I am. I've known Mike for many years, but really got to know him better the past year since Greg passed. We were always making wise cracks on each other's posts on FB. I'm so happy for the memories we made this summer & getting your butt out on the boat! I don't care what anyone says Mike...YOU WERE A WONDERFUL MAN!

Cory, I'm so sorry to hear of your dad's passing. I would say Hi to him when I would see him being a referee. I'm praying that God takes care of you and makes you strong. Maybe you can paint a really cool car in honor of your dad. Thoughts and prayers!
