Kathryn Jane (Leggett) Canfield

July 20, 1937 — September 9, 2017

Kathryn Jane (Leggett) Canfield, age 80, of New Philadelphia, died Saturday, September 9, 2017 at New Dawn Health Care after a long time suffering from Parkinson’s Disease.

Born at Midvale, Ohio on July 20, 1937, Kathryn was the daughter of the late Nathan Lewis and Elizabeth Grace (Day) Leggett. Kathryn had two brothers who were 16 and 21 at the time she was born; and ultimately grew up with her nieces and nephews.

She was a 1955 graduate of Midvale High School and on August 5, 1956 married Theodore “Ted” Canfield. The family’s faith has been nurtured for many years at Schoenbrunn Moravian Church where she had previously served in many different capacities including youth advisor, Sunday school teacher, diener, board member and financial secretary.

While Kathryn held numerous jobs throughout the Tuscarawas Valley, she retired in 1999 from the Alcohol, Drug Addiction, and Mental Health Services Board.

Besides reading, traveling was one of her favorite pastimes. She frequently recalled the 1958 trip out west with her husband and parents; crossing the desert in the middle of summer in a car with no air conditioning. Through the years, she and Ted enjoyed trips in their various campers with their last being a BornFree motor home. Other memorable trips included attending the January 1, 2000 Tournament of Roses Parade, returning from Nova Scotia just days before 9-11 and the countless memories made with her family and grandchildren during trips to Disney World.

In addition to her husband of 61 years, Kathryn leaves behind her children, Jennifer (Michael) Spies of Dover and Rebecca Canfield of Dennison; her grandchildren, Elizabeth Spies of Dover, Sarah Spies of Ann Arbor, and Matthew Spies of Columbus and McKenna Cannon and Jacob Cannon both of Dennison as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her two brothers, Willard Leggett and Warren Leggett.

A Homegoing Service celebrating Kathryn’s life will be held on Sunday, September 24 at 2 p.m. in the Schoenbrunn Moravian Church with Pastor Ben Lippert officiating. Burial in the Evergreen Burial Park at New Philadelphia has taken place.
