Josephine Kornish Lab, 97, of Hennis Care Center at Dover and formerly of Winfield died Friday, June 22, 2018 following a period of declining health.

Born at Roswell, Ohio on June 15, 1921, Josephine was a daughter of the late Charles and Frances Kornish.

She was a graduate of the former Midvale High School and on February 25, 1947 in the former St. Elizabeth’s Church at Roswell, Josephine wed Ivor Lab. Together the couple raised a son and a daughter and shared in 69 years of marriage prior to his death on August 1, 2016.

Josephine and Ivor co-owned and operated Lab’s General Store in Winfield for many years and were members at the former St. Aloysius Catholic Church at Strasburg. Keeping her home spotless was a passion in her life and was proud to always have clean windows, shiny cupboards and a home-cooked meal on the table every night. She was known for her skills as a baker and loved sharing her creations with family and friends.

She is survived by a daughter, Patricia (Craig Septer) Brown of New Philadelphia; a son, Larry (Nancy) Lab of Dublin; her grandchildren, Jason (Kelly) Brown, Lindsay (Brandon) Edgerton, and Lacey (Andy) Ryba; her great-grandchildren, Kassidy and Maxwell Brown, Lola, Lennox and Nash Edgerton, and Lila Ryba; special nieces, JoAnn Chapple and Carole Roy and many other nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, Josephine was preceded in death by her siblings, Charles Kornish, Joseph Kornish, Elizabeth Monte, and Frances Goudy.

A memorial reception celebrating the lives of Ivor and Josephine Lab will be held on Wednesday, August 1, 2018 from 2-4 PM in the Geib Family Center, adjacent to the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. Cremation care has been conducted by Geib’s Tuscarawas Valley Crematory.

No words can truly comfort a family mourning the loss of a mother. However, I came upon this, “A person never dies until there is no one left to speak his name.” If that is true then Josephine Kornish Lab will live on a very long time as many of us recount lovingly how she impacted our lives. There are many memories to cherish of Aunt Josephine, and the best ones include delicious cooking and baking, devotion to family, and laughter. We sometimes tried to duplicate one of her recipes (pierrogis, paczkis, chocolate sheet cake, and gobs are especially notable) - sometimes with success and sometimes not so much!!! How she had the patience to make those cookies she called gobs is a puzzle! She was so very proud of her children and grandchildren with photographs always at the ready to share. And, her love of Ivor was unmistakable, as well as a shining example of how she wanted the rest of the family to love each other. My sincere sympathies to the immediate family.

What a beautiful lady. So many childhood memories at their sweet & comfy country home. They always made me feel so welcome. Ivor on the front porch waving us into the driveway & Josephine greeting us at the door with home baked pies. Even my son has beautiful memories playing wiggle ball with his grandma in the backyard overlooking the fieldsand moo moo’s. Cherishing the memories. Love you Patti & Larry & Jason! God bless.
