Harold “Bill” Allen

Harold William “Bill” Allen, 93, of New Philadelphia passed away on Wednesday, October 10, 2018 following a brief illness.

A son of the late Harry and Isabelle (Lucas) Allen, Bill was born in Cadiz, Ohio and grew up in Jewett, Ohio.

A World War II Army Veteran, Bill served in N. Caledonia and the Philippines and earned the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Ribbon with two Bronze Stars, the Philippines Liberation Ribbon with two Bronze Stars, the Good Conduct Medal, the Victory Medal as well as a Purple Heart. Upon his discharge from the Army and after recovering from serious injuries sustained during battle, he moved to Canton, Ohio.

In 1944, Bill married the love of his life, the former Dolores E. Snyder. The couple shared 66 years of marriage prior to Dolores’ passing on September 1, 2010.

Bill spent many years in the retail clothing business in Canton working for Walkers Clothing, as well as for many other retailers. He then went to work for the United States Postal Service at Canton from which he retired in 1988 after nine years as a mail handler.

Bill will be remembered for his gentleness, kindness and his wonderful sense of humor. He will be missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by two nephews, Paul Allen “P.A.” Dunfee and his wife, Christi of Lakeside, Ohio and Timothy “Tim” Dunfee and his wife, Amie of Cadiz, as well as numerous great-nieces and great-nephews, and special friends, Bill and Hallie Hawthorne and their family.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 66 years, Dolores; his sister, Virginia Dunfee-Duve; and a great-niece.

In keeping with Bill’s wishes, there will be no calling hours or services and cremation will take place through the care of the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia.
