Floyd Hughes

Floyd Earnest Hughes, 96, of New Philadelphia, was called home by his Heavenly Father on Friday, April 20, 2018 at Park Village Health Care Center at New Philadelphia.

Floyd was born on October 1, 1921 at Coshocton, Ohio to Ralph and Retha (Shorder) Hughes. Floyd married the former Doris M. Foster on November 22, 1941.

After graduating from Ball Hill School in Tiverton Township, Coshocton County, Ohio, he worked at Wooster Experiment Station in Wooster, Ohio and as a welder in Coshocton County. He enjoyed playing cards, gardening, camping and fishing at Salt Fork Lake in Cambridge with family and friends. Floyd also played the violin. He and his wife traveled extensively and enjoyed trips to Hawaii, Italy, France and Switzerland as well as throughout the United States.

Floyd was a member of First United Methodist Church and Willing Workers of First United Methodist Church at New Philadelphia.

He retired from the Ohio Power Company in 1984 as a Meter Electrician Supervisor. He was a member of Ohio Power Veteran Association and Ohio Power Retirees Club, Canton Chapter.

Floyd was a member of New Philadelphia Masonic Lodge #177 and Tuscarawas Chapter Royal Arch Mason. He was presented with the Grand Lodge Mason 65 Year Member Award and was also a member of the Tuscarawas Shrine Club & Acacia Club, St Bernard Commandry, Aladdin Temple of Columbus, Ohio, Canton Scottish Rite 32nd Degree, Eastern Star #22 New Philadelphia and a Charter Member of the Lions Club.

In addition to his wife, Doris, with whom he celebrated 76 years of marriage, he is survived by two sons, Eugene (Patricia) Hughes and Steven (Carolyn) Hughes both of New Philadelphia; grandchildren, Michael (Kimm) Hughes of South Carolina and Christine Stewart of New Philadelphia; three great-grandchildren, Evan (Gamika) Hughes of Uhrichsville, Nicole West of Wooster and Brianna Stewart of New Philadelphia. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Floyd was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Carl Hughes; a sister, Priscilla Lorenz and a grandson, Steven Hughes.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 24, 2018 from 5 to 8 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia with Masonic Services being held at 7:45 PM. A funeral service celebrating Floyd’s life will be held on Wednesday, April 25, 2018 at 10:30 AM in the funeral home with Rev. James H. Humphrey officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Burial Park at New Philadelphia. Following the committal service, a luncheon will be held in the First United Methodist Church at New Philadelphia.
