Donald Kamban

October 20, 1930 — October 14, 2018

Donald Merrill Kamban, age 87, of New Philadelphia, entered the presence of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, October 14, 2018, when he surely heard “well done my good and faithful servant”. Don passed away after a period of declining health and was lovingly surrounded by his family.

Don was the son of the late Martin and Lillie Frances (Groves) Kamban. He was born outside of Cambridge, Ohio, on October 20, 1930. Don attended Uhrichsville High School and proudly served our country as a Marine during the Korean War where he earned a Purple Heart.

Don’s life was characterized by his love for his family, strong work ethic and deep Christian faith. While visiting Tuscora Park, Don caught a glimpse of Helen (formerly Chek) and the two quickly began a lifelong romance. Don and Helen celebrated 65 years of marriage before her passing in 2016. They enjoyed traveling together and spent many winters in Florida and Hawaii. Don and Helen were legendary hosts and frequently opened their home to friends and family. Don’s love for Helen was exemplified by the more than one hundred roses he planted in their front yard for her.

Together, Don and Helen partnered to own and operate Schoenbrunn Gardens and Landscaping, a company their family continues to operate to this day. Don was widely known for his extensive knowledge of horticulture and he was well-liked and respected by many of his patrons.

Don was also a man of great faith which impacted the lives of many in his family and in our community. Don faithfully attend the First United Methodist Church of New Philadelphia where he served in many ministries including as an adult Sunday School teacher for many years. Don also led Full Gospel luncheons at the Union Country Club which were attended by many throughout our community. Don would spend time each morning in personal Bible study and prayer with his wife. His faith has been a great example to his children and grandchildren.

Outside of church, Don was active in our community. He was a Past President of the New Philadelphia Rotary Club and one of the longest serving members.

Don’s legacy will be carried on by his children, Marty (Shirley) Kamban, Randy (Irene) Kamban of New Philadelphia, Tim (Becky) Kamban of Dover; his grandchildren, Landon Kamban and his fiancé Lauren, Krista (Mike) Manfull, Nate (Amanda) Kamban, Alexa Kamban all of New Philadelphia, Andrew Kamban of Dover, Kacey (Sean) Chapman of Navarre, Mikey (Bethany) Kamban of Kent and Tess Kamban of Pittsburgh, PA; nine great-grandchildren; his siblings, Wanda King, Barbara (Richard) McCoy, Wayne Kamban of New Philadelphia; Elsie Pounds of Dennison and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by his wife Helen, an infant daughter, Robin Kamban, a great-granddaughter, Avery Manfull, and four sisters and two brothers.

The family will greet guests on Wednesday, October 17, 2018, from 11 AM to 1 PM at the First United Methodist Church of New Philadelphia where Rev. Susan Brown will lead a service celebrating Don’s life at 1 PM. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Burial Park in New Philadelphia.
