Dan L. Materna, 60, of New Philadelphia went to his forever home on Friday, November 10, 2017 while in the care of Community Hospice’s Truman House following a three-year battle with cancer.

Born in Aultman Hospital at Canton on April 19, 1957, Dan is a son of Myrna Lake Holderbaum of Dennison and the late Richard Materna.

A member Tusky Valley High School’s class of 1975, Dan worked for many years in the oil & gas industry and in hotel maintenance. He had a great talent and passion for cooking and worked for Poppy’s Restaurant in Uhrichsville for a handful of years.

Dan had a love for Ohio State University football and the Cleveland sports teams. He also enjoyed hiking, camping, and spending time on the beach; making a last trip to the Outer Banks, Nags Head and Kitty Hawk several weeks ago. Dan also had a great love for history and the Civil War. He loved learning new facts and collecting keepsake pieces from the era. Above all, Dan loved his family and embraced opportunities given to him by spending time together.

In addition to his mother, Dan, will be deeply missed by his beloved family, his wife, the former Vickie Kaiser, whom he married on October 2, 1993; his children, Nathan (fiancée, Kristen) Materna of Canton, Dannielle (Joel) Stone of Bolivar, Brandi Kissel of New Philadelphia, and A.J. Materna of East Liverpool; his grandchildren, Melina, Allanah, Breonah, Gavin, Naomi, and Callie.

Completing the family are his sister, Shannon (Bill) Karcher; two brothers, Gary (Christina) Holderbaum, Jr. and Kurt Materna as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his father, Dan was preceded in death by a grandson, Reid Stone; an infant brother, Richard; and three brothers, Steve, Scott, and Brett Materna.

The family will greet guests on Thursday, November 16, 2017 from 4-7PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. Pastor John Stevenson will lead a service celebrating Dan’s life in the funeral home’s chapel on Friday November 17, 2017 at 10:30 AM. Inurnment will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery at Sandyville. All are invited to a meal and fellowship in the social hall of Bethel Worship Center following services.

The family requests memorial contributions in Dan’s name be directed to Bethel Worship Center, 634 N Main St, Uhrichsville, OH 44683.
