Betty Lee Gopp, 84, of New Philadelphia, died Wednesday, August 17, 2016 in Union Hospital at Dover following a recent illness.

A daughter of the late James Alvin and Eleanor Elizabeth (Tripp) Riggle, Betty was born November 15, 1931 at New Philadelphia, Ohio.

Betty graduated from New Philadelphia High School in 1949. Then on May 3, 1953, she married the love of her life, David Lewis Gopp, and together the couple raised two children, Paul and Elizabeth.

During her younger years, Betty worked at her family’s grocery store, Riggle’s Finer Foods. She was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church at New Philadelphia and enjoyed playing board games with her grandchildren and friends.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Patty Gopp of Bowerston; her daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and Russ Shroyer of New Philadelphia; her grandchildren, Lee James Gopp of Columbus and Allison and Mitchell Shroyer both of New Philadelphia; a sister-in-law, Carolyn Sloe of Berea, Kentucky and several nieces and nephews.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents; her husband and a sister and brother-in-law, Helen and Robert Sloe.

In keeping with Betty’s wishes cremation will take place and a private inurnment will be held in Evergreen Burial Park at New Philadelphia. The family will receive friends during a public reception celebrating Betty’s life on Tuesday, August 23, 2016 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Geib Family Center at New Philadelphia.

The family suggests, in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Betty’s memory to the Crohn’s Foundation of America, P.O. Box 1245 Albert Lea, MN 56007 or to the American Melanoma Foundation, 8929 University Center Lane, Suite 202, La Jolla, CA 92122.
